Meet Mosaic.

Plan your route through museums/galleries based on your interests and recommended exhibits/paths. Click through right here or check out the full thing below.

Project Goal

The goal of this project was to democratize art and improve the way people interact with art galleries and museums.

It allows them to add their interests and customize a route based on them.

Key Challenges

Museums often have thousands of exhibits or pieces.

Many people feel intimidated or lost when touring museums/galleries.

People have different interests

Target Audience

People ages 15-65 who go to museums/art galleries.

People with specific interests (i.e., impressionism, historical movements, certain artists)

People who feel intimidated by art museums or galleries.

Research Method

Moderated usability study featuring 5 people

Tested users ability to complete core functionality, asked open ended questions regarding features and improvements.

Findings included some real world use cases, navigation suggestions, and more.

Initial Design Concepts

The initial designs featured a simple layout and a system to add checks next to their favorite artists or exhibits. The map functionality was very rudimentary and unclear.

Though initial direction was interesting,
it had limited navigation and scope.

Wireframes

The second iteration featured a more clear navigation, a bigger scope, and more features. Specifically, the user is now able to get a route planned for them ("Surprise Me"), add art movements/types of pieces, and navigate better see related works/artists.
See below.

User Testing Results

While most users rated the core functionality as a 1 in terms of difficulty (Scale of 1 to 3, with 1 being the easiest), there was still some difficulty for users to navigate between the pages and complete certain tasks (like clicking into exhibits for more details).

Additionally, users wanted more options for adding exhibits or featured pieces to their journey, plus a clearer way to click into exhibits on their path and edit their path. Finally, users wanted a clearer sense of where they were in the app.

Conclusion / Next Steps

Navigation is key - each action by the user should have a clear effect. To solve this problem, I included more animations and interactions.

Additionally, while the user is obviously very important, the needs of the client/stakeholder are important as well (in this case, a museum/gallery). For example, while they might have thousands of pieces, they probably have a few pieces that are on loan or are extremely popular/important. The Louvre wouldn't leave out the Mona Lisa on their app, it would be front and center (digitally speaking).
